Blogger Template
Posted On 10-28-2008 , 12:13 PM
As many of you may know, I have a Blogger blog (Artist Anika's World 2) which compliments this one. While this blog focuses on current art projects of mine, Artist Anika's World 2 is more of a personal blog. As time has gone by, I have gotten more and more bored with the very plain appearance of AAW2, so I have spent time this weekend creating a new style.
Below is a screenshot from the old style.
As you can see, it is very boring and plain. It is definitely not a blog which looks as though it belongs to an artist. So I did a quick search and found a free blogger template (while I know a little HTML code, I don't know enough to create a Blogger template from scratch). Below is a preview of the template:
There was a lot about this template that I liked, but the computer header was all wrong for my blog. So I spent the weekend playing around in Photoshop and came up with this header:
The header may not look like it was difficult to create, but, trust me, it was. Not only did I have to remove the computer pieces, but I also had to recreate the edges of the white areas. The computer parts and their shadows resulted in a lot of gaps. I had to fill in those gaps and recreate the rounded corners of the header.
When you put the header together with the rest of the template, this was the result:

I don't know about anyone else, but I tend to like the new template much better than the old. It is more artistic and it shows my creativity and interests much more than the previous header. I thank the creator of this template and left her URL in the footer so that everyone knows that all I changed was the header. I would never want to steal the credit of a creation from another artist.
P.S. I also updated the header of this blog to incorporate the font type in the title that is seen in AAW2. Now both have matching fonts in the header.

Halloween Craft Kits
Posted On 10-08-2008 , 7:42 PM
For Those who are looking for arts and crafts projects to do for this Halloween, I have created a page in the site about Halloween Craft Kits. This page lists a lot of the basics, like pumpkin carving, but also shows a few less known kits, like creating a Halloween planter. I hope everyone has a great Halloween this year!
P.S. The goblin is done in the design of the new Return to the Labyrinth manga that I have fallen in love with. I loved the original Jim Henson movie and the manga are great!

Reaper

Over the weekend I spent way too much time watching Naruto (an anime show about ninjas that is incredibly fun). During my fiance's smoke breaks, I spent time working on this:

This isn't a ninja, but kind of a female reaper character. The weapon she is carrying is one the is shown on the cover of one of our Naruto boxed sets, but the character is all my own. I wanted to draw something dark for Halloween, but have never been really good at dark and scary art, so this is what I came up with. You can't see her face real well in this smaller picture, but if you click on the image to enlarge it you can see that the face is pretty dark.
The Process:
The character is done entirely with my graphic tablet. I tried to keep her sketch-like, very unfinished. I also kept the background really simple rather than detailed.
That is for two reasons:
1) I am still working on adding backgrounds to my drawings. Backgrounds don't come naturally to me and I typically have a hard time with them.
2) I really wanted the focus of drawing to be on the character, but an all black or gray background didn't match.
I was also experimenting with a rain look in this image. I haven't really spent much time drawing characters at night or in the rain (generally, I focus on faces and so draw them in full light). It was my fiance who suggested that the streaked background looked like rain, so I went with it. I didn't want to make it too detailed, just a hint.
Thoughts:
Overall, I think it turned out pretty well. It was the first in a lot of fronts, and I really enjoyed creating it. I like the night look to the image and I like the sketch quality of the finished product. It's not a professional image by any means, but it came across alright.
P.S. Site Update:
Oh, this is a few days late, but I finally added the last stage of my Photoshop Tutorial last week: Red Shiny Material. I also added a page on Graphic Tablets.
If anyone has any thoughts, on this artwork or on anything else with my blog or site, feel free to comment.
