Favicon?

Posted On 12-31-2008 , 12:24 PM

I’m rather proud of my recent, if small, project.

I’ve seen a lot of sites that have pretty little icons in the tabs and by the address in Firefox and have always wanted to make my own, but never knew how and, really, it was too far down on my “things-to-do” list to bother with.

Then, yesterday, when I was researching something else, I came across the word “favicon.” I had no idea what that was, but had to Google it. Turns out, those little icon thingies have a name…they are “favicons.”

Anyway, then I had to make one.

I created a series of little images….

Then I cheated. I have no idea how to compress these images into a single animated image, so I found a site that does it for me. There are a ton of them and, though this isn’t the one I used, here is the best two that I’ve seen are: MySpace Animated GIF Generator and GifMake (my fav).

Below is the resulting image.

Though, in my favicon, I made the image so that it stops rather than continuously loops. The way I figure it, if it keeps moving it will get annoying after a while. It annoys me anyway. So my favicon stops after a few times through (anytime the page is refreshed or you click from one page in the site to another, it starts again though).

The thought for the favicon came because I was looking at what other people use and trying to think of an idea for myself. I started noticing that, when a site doesn’t use a favicon, Firefox automatically inserts a blank sheet of paper as the favicon. Then, I had this little mental image of someone drawing on that paper.

That led to creating the above favicon where a paintbrush pops up and paints my world logo onto the paper. Though, the world it paints is a very simplified version of my actual world. With so small of an image, the actual world looks very undefined and unattractive.

Overall, I really like how it turned out. What do you think?

P.S.  It takes a little work with your code to make this favicon functional.  This code: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="your-image-location.gif" /> needs to be inserted into your pages for the favicon to show.  If you wanna look at some pre-made favicons, Favicon.cc has a ton of really good ones.  Just save the image, upload it to your site, and insert the code to make it work.

Additional note: the favicon finished file may be a .gif, .jpg, .ico, or .png.  It really doesn't matter, it just depends on your site and what will function within it.

Merry Christmas

Posted On 12-26-2008 , 6:36 PM

This is just a short post to say Merry Christmas to everyone and to show off the Christmas picture that I have been working on yesterday and today.  I hope everyone likes it and I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday.

P.S.  This drawing was done with the help of Photoshop brushes from Brusheezy and Deviantart.

Reflection

Posted On 12-22-2008 , 12:35 PM

I found a paper that I wrote back in high school on my computer the other day. The paper talked about who I am as a person and who I fit into my family. I'm not very impressed with it as a whole, but the introductory paragraphs caught my eye and I figured I would share them with you:

"I am an Artist

Before my eyes lays a white window, blank and empty. It is a window to nowhere, a window to anywhere. This window provides infinite possibilities. Inside the white hides a multitude of colors and shades, lines and curves. Inside the white hides endless amounts of untold emotions, all just waiting for the right person to bring them to the surface. I am that person. I am a creator, an artist.

I can see things where no one else can. Where others see a blank piece of paper, I see the potential for a beautiful work of art. Where others see the emptiness of a page, I see what the page will be when I am done with it. I am a creator. I produce, craft, carve, stitch, and sketch. I bring out, emphasize, write, and rhyme. I am an artist."

I am absurdly proud of those two paragraphs.

Anyway, I am working on two new pages and a new drawing for the site that should be up in the next two weeks. Not promising a fast delivery on the pages, as it is getting pretty close to Christmas, but they will be up soon.

If I don't write again before-hand: Happy Christmas to all!

Birthday Projects

Posted On 12-15-2008 , 7:50 PM

First and foremost: Today’s my birthday! YAY!

We celebrated my birthday over the weekend and I got a lot of great art gifts (of course). However, my favorite of these art gifts was a 10”x12” LightTracer Light Box by ArtOGraph.

The box is designed to light up from within, so that your paper is lit from the bottom. This lets you get more detail into your drawings because you can see a much wider range of light and dark hues.

I was also given the material and cotton lining to make a bag for this LightBox. Below are some pictures of my finalized “birthday project.”

It was a lot of fun making the bag, though it meant that I didn’t have time to use the LightBox over the weekend. I will show off my first picture with the LightBox here when I get some free time to draw.

A note on the bag: I love to sew, but have never done it much. I had never created a bag before, especially a square one, so this was a really fun project to attempt. I think the bag turned out well, and it cushions the LightBox perfectly (though it is a tighter fit than intended).

Anyway, off to celebrate more. Wish me well.

Stage 2

Posted On 12-08-2008 , 11:51 AM

The Project:

Does anyone even remember Stage 1 anymore?  I started this project so long ago (wow, way back in July...I just looked it up) that it’s a little sad even putting the results in now.  Embarrassing, really.  I’d like to make the excuse that I just had too much other stuff going on to get to this project, but the truth is that I didn’t.  I just kept forgetting about it or putting it off.  Anyway, I bypassed using the project for a shading tutorial in this site, as I wanted to finally finish it and creating a shading tutorial out of it would have taken even longer.

Above is the finished drawing, beside the original outline for comparison.  As you can see, I had to reshape much of the baby.  The original was too fat.  Considering this is the first time I have ever drawn a baby, though, I don’t think I did too bad.

In the Stage 2 drawing, the baby’s face is a little wider than in the model and the mouth is a little too small.  I love how the eyes and nose turned out though and I am even mostly happy with the hands and feet.

The Point:

As you may or may not realize, this project was originally started as a header for a friend and her BabyGetFramed website.  Below is the finished header.

The woman holding the baby in this header is the same woman seen in another header that I created.  This is because my same friend owns both websites (and a few others, she is an overachiever) and I wanted to keep all her headers (I only made 2 of the three) in the same style.  The websites don’t relate, the only reason I wanted to keep all the headers similar is for personal preferences.

If anyone has any thoughts or ideas…or constructive criticism, please feel free to comment.

Easter Crafts

Posted On 12-04-2008 , 7:26 PM

Well, I just finished the Easter Crafts page for the holiday section of my site.  Don't worry, I already know what you are thinking:

Easter Crafts?  EASTER CRAFTS?!

No, I am not confused....or nuts.  I was just tired of rushing to get a page done before the holiday.  I had to skip Thanksgiving altogether.  Now I'm working on getting a few holiday pages in now, and I will add more pages when it get's closer to those holidays.  So far, I've created a Holiday Crafts page, an Easter Crafts page, a Halloween Craft Kits page, and a Christmas Crafts page.

I also took the time to try my hand at creating a newsletter:

I actually found some great newsletters on the BuzzingKidsWorld website and wanted to give it a try.  I don't think mine turned out too shabby for a first attempt, and all of the crafts I put in there are a lot of fun (the String Eggs are my absolute favorite Easter craft, I make them every year).

Anyway, not really a craft project, but I wanted to share it with everyone.  I did make a few of the images in the newsletter...though one comes from a lovely lady I met in Flickr who allowed me to use the image and others are clipart.  Still...there is some art there.  :Þ

Holiday Work

Posted On 12-01-2008 , 11:43 AM

Well, I didn't get nearly as much done on my site over the holiday weekend as I planned.  I had all sorts of beautiful plans...finishing my holiday pages, working on creating some new oil pastel tutorials, and such.  Instead, the only thing that I got done was the creation of the below image for my Clean and Simple Scrapbooking page.

Ah, well.  I may not have gotten anything done, but I had a great holiday.  Very relaxing, and that is just as important.

I watched a lot of Naruto (an anime series that is one of my favorite shows) and read some manga.  I spent a lot of time with my fiance, and just enjoyed a break.

Anyway, now that Thanksgiving is over, I will try and get my butt in gear and get some more done with the site.  Not promising what (I am really bad at sticking to a schedule with this site, as I just work on whatever comes to mind), but I will definitely have new stuff up soon!
