Icarus
Posted On 12-11-2009 , 12:06 AM
Icarus is best known in Greek mythology for flying too close to the sun on his wings of wax. The wings melted and the young man fell to his death.
That's a really over-simplified version of the story, but it's late and I am just posting this before bed. This week's (and it will probably take quite a bit longer) project has been a drawing of Icarus. I'm not far enough along in the drawing to post it, but tonight I spent a few hours creating the title text that will appear in the corner of the drawing.
This title text was done with the guide provided in this tutorial.
It was a great tutorial and a lot of fun to play with. Thanks to the original artist!

Grandfather and Granddaughter
Posted On 12-03-2009 , 9:24 AM
I mentioned last week that I was working on a couple of different projects lately. Many of them have been Christmas related, so I didn’t want to showcase them here until the presents have been received. Well, two of them have.
The first was a woodburned plaque of my father, his lovely wife, and their dog. Unfortunately, I lost my camera over Thanksgiving while I was visiting them and no longer have a picture. I’m such a klutz, lol.
The other was an oil pastel drawing of my grandfather and myself. I kept a copy of that one, so was able to snap a picture with my camera phone (sorry for the fuzzyness...phone cameras aren't notoriously great cameras).
It didn’t turn out as well as I’d hoped. Grandpa’s shoulders are too narrow and my face is too tall (I have a pretty round head in reality). Still, I love how the colors developed and am pretty pleased with how much my grandpa really looks like a younger version of the actual man. I’m especially pleased with how well the colors came out where the glasses cover his skin.
You can't see all the details in this photo, but grandpa has more wrinkles in his forhead and around his eyes than show up. He even has a mustach that can't really be seen here. His hair and hands (and mine) also has a lot more detail in the actual drawing.
One day, when I can get my scanner to work with my new computer, I will scan in my copy of the drawing so that the picture here is higher quality.
P.S. Got a new graphic tablet as an early birthday/Christmas present (the lovely Intuos4, which is amazing, by the way) so you’ll probably see more digital pictures soon!
