Posted On 03-31-2009 , 6:14 PM

Well, the pages aren't 100% finished (they need images and some cleaning up), but take a look at the menus!  Huh, huh?  Whatcha think?

Non-Idle Hands

Posted On 03-28-2009 , 7:49 PM

First, an update:

My computer is up and running again and is even connected to the internet again.  However, it is still a long way from being back to its fully-functional form.  I don't know if you know, but reinstalling Windows means that everything is deleted from the computer.  So I still need to move all of my files (My older artwork and current projects, as well as writings and other stuff) back onto the computer.  I also need to reinstall all of my software (things like Photoshop, the program that makes my scanner work, etc) before I can be back to posting my own artwork.

My hands, however, have not been idle during my computer's downtime.  To start, I've found a new wonderful piece of artwork to feature today.

The Labyrinth meets Gremlins:

You probably don't know this about me, but I was born in the mid 80s (yes, I'm still a young pup) and have a particular fondness for 80s cult classics.  A few of my favorites include: The Labyrinth (one of my all time favorite movies) and Gremlins 1&2 . Of course those are not my only favorites by any means.  I also love Batteries Not Included, The Crow, Legend, The Dark Crystal, and quite a few others.

However, I am particularly mentioning The Labyrinth and Gremlins because todays featured artwork is a cross-over between those two movies:

Labyrinth Gremlins

This amazing piece is (as is made obvious by the watermark) found on Deviantart.com and was drawn by the talented Chaotica-I.  The piece features Jereth (The Labyrinth's Goblin King, played by the stunning David Bowie), Gizmo, and Daffy (both from Gremlins).  The drawing is titled "Why, oh why...", a title that reflects Jereth's thoughts of "Why, oh why did I have to get him wet."  For those unfamiliar with the storyline of Gremlins, let me just include the short disclaimer that when the cute and fuzzy gremlins (like Gizmo, the white and brown gremlin to the right of the pic) get wet, they turn scaley, evil, and hyperactive (like Daffy, the green gremlin directly behind Jereth).

The picture has an amazing amount of detail, which you can see in full size in Chaotica-I's Deviantart page.  As Chaotica-I was gracious enough to let me feature the piece within this blog, I kindly ask any of my readers who have a Deviantart account to visit his gallery and comment (maybe even Favorite) the art!

New Pages:

Besides just finding and receiving permission to feature the incredibly sexy Jereth...er...sorry, the artwork above, I have also been working on writing a few category pages for this site.

It has been brought to my attention that my site can be easily divided in two: Drawings and Crafts.  In an effort to make navigating the site easier, I am working on writing two category pages (World of Drawing and Crafty Creations) to split the two areas of the site.  All drawing information will, obviously, be under the World of Drawing category, while all craft information will be under the Crafty Creations category.

I'm going to be re-working my menus to reflect the two areas and show the two areas more clearly.  So keep an eye out for the upcoming changes in my menu...I'm not sure how it will be done yet, but I'm trying to come up with something appealing and ingenious.  In the meantime, let me know your thoughts, opinions, or complaints about the site, navigation, future pages, or anything really.

P.S.  I also do not have anything resembling Spell Check on this computer yet, so let me know if you find any errors in this blog entry that need editing.  In the meantime, I appologize for all errors.

Deviantart Update

Posted On 03-20-2009 , 6:13 PM

Update on previous entry: Okay, the Deviantart widget was a bad idea. Don't get me wrong, it is a cool little widget and an AWESOME website, but the widget has design flaws. 1) It randomly decided to center all my text under the widget and the only way I could left align the text again was to add a <div> code to the page that shouldn't have to be there. 2) It randomly turned all my links (for this entry) grey and would not allow me to correct them. 3) It messed up my footer so that only part of the footer was appearing in my blog and the rest was cut off.

I'm not sure what is going on with their widget. I'm guessing that they've got some coding errors in it wrong. Either that or the Javascript was just fighting with the rest of my blog. Either way, despite the AWESOMENESS of Deviantart, I've taken the widget down so that my blog style is not messed up beyond repair.

I still recommend that you check out Deviantart if you've got the time...maybe even set up an account with them if you are an artist or writer.  However, I advise against experimenting with their "Pasties" until they are properly set up.

Sorry to anyone who enjoyed the widget.

Deviantart

Posted On 03-19-2009 , 5:52 PM

Well, my computer is still on the fritz.  Which may actually be a good thing as far as you guys are conserned.  For anyone who was (albeit silently) tired of seeing my delicate pen strokes...I am now posting other's work!

Today's entry features a Deviantart "pastie" (they named it, don't blame me).  This is basically a widget that will show three of the most popular daily images in Deviantart's "Traditional Art" category.  This means that every day, this entry will be updated with three of the most popular images (refresh this page for the next three most popular).  It's rather a cool little widget.

See Update!!!

Anyway, if you do not have experience with Deviantart as of yet, I highly recommend that you take a look around.  Though, admittedly, some of the art on the site is...well....crap.  Still, there is some art there that is absolutely amazing.  And it is a great place for any new or experienced artist to share your work and get feedback on it, as well as to build a community of artist friends with various interests.

Deviantart features traditional art, fanart, writing, photography, painting, digital art, and more.  So go check it out....then come back here and share the comment love or I might feel abandoned and unloved.

P.S.  Yes, I did pretentiously aim the link to Deviantart directly to my own profile.  What can I say, I'm narcissistic.

Broken

Posted On 03-13-2009 , 5:42 PM

So...........

I broke my computer.  Dead.

I honestly don't know how I did it.  One night, my home computer was working fine.  The next day...crash.  My fiance says that I somehow got a virus on it.  Which means that this week, I won't be able to upload any of my own images.  I can't scan in new images and can't work on my current project.

So, today I am posting (from work, shhhhh!) a wonderful image created by
Cyber-29 of Deviantart.  This image fit the theme of the week so well that I had to use it.  All credit for it's creation should go to Cyber-29 and you should this persons account on Deviantart and comment if you like the image (plus, you can see the full size image in their account).

Wish my computer luck.  My fiance will be trying to fix it for me this weekend.

Lucivar Color 2

Posted On 03-06-2009 , 1:04 AM

Well, I haven’t been able to update as much this week as I wanted to, but I at least managed twice.

Still working on coloring Lucivar from The Black Jewels Trilogy (see first Lucivar entry). Today was spent on the eyes and a little on the nose. I also took a bit more time on the shading of the chest. In retrospect, the chest from my last update looked very Ken-doll and plastic. I hope now it comes across as more natural tones and skin-like.

I’m keeping the coloring as an excellently colored drawing, rather than going completely realistic. You’ll notice it mostly in the face. It’s obvious that the character was drawn, as the eyes and nose are not completely realistically shaped.

I’m doing this for two reasons. 1) I still want the picture to be recognizable as a coloring of the original drawing (even if I fixed what was wrong in the original). 2) I’m still experimenting with realistically coloring in Photoshop and haven’t quite mastered my graphic tablet enough to do such fine details. I still try and angle my tablet as I would a paper, which obviously does not work.

Without further ado, here is Stage 2 of Lucivar’s colorization:

As always, constructive criticism is helpful and desired.

Lucivar Color 1

Posted On 03-01-2009 , 10:15 PM

I have to apologize to anyone who reads this blog on a regular basis.  I usually post at least once a week, but skipped last week.  I am going to use the excuse that last week was my fiance's birthday and I was too busy celebrating him to really care about posting here.  Not that I don't love all my dear readers, of course.  ;)

Anyway, I plan on posting a few times this week to make up for the lack last week.  My current project is the Photoshop coloring of Lucivar Yaslana (see original post).  This is a work in progress, as coloring takes a long time.  Here is stage 1:

I'm having a lot of fun coloring him, and fixing the errors from the original sketch.  As you may remember reading, the original sketch was an on-again-off-again drawing done over two years.  The chest of the character was lacking and the neck and head were too large for the rest of the figure (see realistic proportions for humans).  I'm fixing those errors and making him a little more realistic....and sexier; mustn't forget sexier.

At this stage, I've got the basic torso, arms, and hair done.  The face and hands are still being shaded and I haven't touched the wings, pants, or background yet.  Yes, despite my dislike in drawing them, this picture will eventually have a background.

You will also notice that the eyes are still blank, which my fiance finds creepy, but I wanted to get the skin tone right before moving to the eyes.  If you've read The Black Jewels Trilogy, you know that Lucivar is described as having dark hair, with golden skin and eyes.  The eyes should be interesting.  I think I've about got the skin color right, but I'm still working on it a little.

Any opinions or constructive criticism are greatly appreciated, especially as this is still a work in progress and I still have time to fix any errors that might be pointed out.  :D
