Draw a Frog

Draw a Frog
Draw a Frog:

Within this tutorial, you are going to learn how to draw a frog. Specifically, you will learn how to draw a tree frog. There are a large variety of frogs to choose from, but the basic principles taught here will stay the same for any that you choose to draw.

Start With The Head
We are going to start with a basic skeletal outline (circles for thicker areas and lines for thinner areas). As with all animals you may choose to sketch, it is easiest to start with the head.

Start by sketching a medium size circle, then connect a smaller circle to the edge. Make sure to leave plenty of room on your paper to draw the rest of your frog. This will form a head and nose appearance:

Body

Triangular Body Next, create a rounded triangle shape for the body. This should be a little less than double the length of the head and nose together.

Arms
To draw the arms of a frog is very similar to sketching the arms of a human. The arms connect below the head at the shoulders of the triangular body. They have an upper arm, lower arm, hand, and four fingers (rather than a human’s five). For this stage of the sketch, connect each of the arms and fingers with thin lines, giving the arm shape. Then add small circles at the elbows, hands, and the pads of each finger. Elbows, Hands, and Finger Pads should be made with circles

Legs
When you draw a tree frog, the legs are often extended out from the body; other breeds may appear differently.

Draw two circles at the knees of your frog, showing where the bend can be found. This will help you create a more realistic leg later down road.

Finally, the legs have one more bend that could be considered the ankle of the leg. This should be a short distance from the foot. Sketch a circle here, then connect that to the foot and toes of the frog. Unlike the hand, the foot has 5 toes, the inner-most toe is smaller than the rest and the forth toe out from the body is the longest.

The final legs should look something like this:

Eyes
Eye Outline The eyes are slightly bulging, so begin them by sketching the eye sockets. Draw two large circles close to the middle of the head of the frog. Then draw two ovals within the sockets wherever looks natural. This will likely be toward the bottom of the closest socket and the middle of the furthest socket.
Draw a Frog Step Two: Muscle

Your sketch will look very rough at this point, but you should have the basic skeletal shape of the creature. Now it is time to add the muscle over the skeleton. Start with the body and head.

Draw a line outside of the circles and triangle, connecting and smoothing the various areas of the frog. Remember not to make your lines too stiff or too circular. Let your pencil flow around the skeletal shape.

Muscle of Body

Next, trace the shape of the eyes. The furthest eye socket will be connected to the head, so trace the eye extending from the socket. Then sketch the oval shape of the closest eye, creating small points at the corners. Finally, draw an arc along the back of the closest socket, fading out as you get closer to the eye of the frog.

Eyes Muscle

Then move on to the muscle of the arms. The arms should be mostly tube-like, but should get bigger near the shoulders and hands, and smaller near the elbows. The fingers of the frog, while often very straight, should have a small round knuckle near the middle.

Arms Outline

Finally, draw the legs of the frog. Even more than the arms, the legs are very tube-like. They should follow the shape of the two circles forming the knee (coming in at the middle of the bend) and should get larger toward the foot. As with the fingers, each toe should also have a small round knuckle in the middle.

Outline with Skeleton visible

Now erase your skeleton and voila! You have learned to draw a frog.
