WoodBurning Patterns

For those who aren't the greatest drawers, or do not want to spend the time to draw their own designs, woodburning patterns are the way to go! These are predrawn designs for your projects.

View our Pyrography Tools page for information on different tools of the trade, including burners, kits, and tips.

There are many different types of woodburning patterns available today.  These are often designs that were created by other people that are sold for you to burn into some type of materials.  These designs can be used with, obviously, woodburning, as well as leather pyrography and even leather stamping or "tooling."

If you are a talented artist, you can create patterns of your own.  Or, if you know how to use photo editing software, you can create your own woodburning patterns from photos (view tutorial). When creating your own woodburning patterns, sketch the design first on flat paper (this decreases errors).  Once you have the sketch, you can purchase carbon paper and trace the sketch directly onto the wood you are burning.  Creating your own patterns is usually the cheapest way to go, but not everyone is confident enough in their drawing skills to do this.

What Is Available

For those that don’t want to use their own drawings, there are many woodburning patterns and kits that come with different pictures and the required square of carbon paper.  Then you simply place the carbon paper over the project, place the picture over that, and trace the picture with a pencil.  This puts the design right onto the work and you simply trace it with your burner. Woodburning patterns come in all different designs.  There are animal, landscapes, people…anything that you have seen drawn, there is probably a woodburning pattern somewhere out there on it.  You can buy these patterns and kits online, or at your local art store.  If you already have your own wood and carbon paper, you can print designs and use those.

Making Selections:

When selecting the pattern to burn, make sure to choose one appropriate for both the shape of the wood and your own level of talent.  For as many designs as are available in woodburning patterns, there are just as many levels of skill.  Many are simple, few lines and no shading.  We recommend that beginners start here.  Later, when you’ve learned to use the different tools of the trade, there are woodburning patterns available that utilize all of the different tools.

Any woodburning pattern that shows shading is not for beginners.  Shading takes a great deal of skill with the different burner tips and a knowledge of the wood that you are working with.

Be careful when working on any woodburning project!

There are many more woodburning patterns available under the Patterns section in our Pyrography Store.
